Harvey Recovery, Outcome 6

In the past few days, I’ve helped by volunteering at the George R. Brown Convention and with the Boy Scouts. We took a ton of clothes and donations to the GRB shelter to drop off and then spent our afternoon sorting donations and helping people get settled. A few days later, we went with the Boy Scouts to help a woman in Bellaire with cleaning her totaled house out. We also went the next day to help another lady clean her totaled house out. Throughout these three experiences, I was able to demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance by understanding that people displaced by disasters are all over the world and that helping these displaced people is a part of a larger effort to help refugees and disaster victims all over the world.

Climbing in Aspen, Outcomes 4 and 3

Today I went climbing at Independence Pass in Aspen, Colorado, my first climbing experience since Mondamin. I helped to plan the expedition itself as well as working with my guide to pick climbs based on past experience with climbing in the area. I also climbed hard and while I did climb until I was wiped out, my guide was still going strong. So I decided to stick with him and keep climbing. I was able to show commitment to and perseverance in a fieldwork experience when I climbed past my limits and kept going with my guide. I was also able to demonstrate how to initiate and plan a fieldwork experience by talking with my guide and setting up the expedition.
